Accessibility Statement
Last updated: November 6, 2026
Our commitment
DebtCat is a free self-help tool for understanding debt collection notices. It is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice. We want everyone to be able to use it, including people who use screen readers, keyboard navigation, screen magnification, voice control, or other assistive technology.
The standard we follow
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA on every page of debtcat.com. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible to people with disabilities. This is our goal, not a claim that every part of the site already meets it. The known gaps are listed below.
What we have done
- Every page of the site has a "Skip to main content" link, an English language setting, one main heading, and separate header, main content, and footer areas.
- We checked text, links, form field edges, and the keyboard focus ring against the WCAG contrast minimums on every page, including the white menu on the blue header, error messages, the expanded Email yourself option, and the text in the chat transcript PDF. Links inside text are underlined, not shown by color alone.
- Forms have labels tied to each field, error messages that screen readers announce, and autofill hints for your name, email, and address, including when you edit your details on the review page and in the Email yourself option. Our request to the payment page includes the email you already gave us. We have checked this in our code, but have not yet watched it work in a live test checkout.
- You can use the site with only a keyboard, including address suggestions, the email option on the dispute options page, the review page Edit and Save buttons, and the DebtChat download window. While the DebtChat human check is open, the rest of the page is set aside so the keyboard stays inside it. We tested that window with a stand-in for the real check, not the live one.
- The cookie notice never covers the part of the page you are using.
- DebtChat tells screen reader users who sent each message.
- Pages work at 320 pixels wide and when text spacing is increased, and the site respects your device's "reduce motion" setting.
- We removed old copies of guides and unused account pages. The old links we know about forward to the current page. If you find one that does not, please tell us.
- Guide headings are marked so screen readers announce them in order.
How we tested
On November 5 and 6, 2026 we tested every page with automated checks (axe-core, IBM Equal Access, and HTML_CodeSniffer) in Chromium at desktop and phone widths, and by hand with only the keyboard, at 320 pixels wide, and with increased text spacing. An independent reviewer checked the same pages twice, including browser zoom at 200%, form error states, and the PDFs, and we retested what they found. Address lookups, the human check, and payments were tested with stand-in responses, not the live services. We have not yet recorded a test with a screen reader such as VoiceOver or NVDA.
Known limits
We are still working on some parts of the site:
- PDF letters. The dispute letter and chat transcript PDFs are made in your browser. They have an English language setting and a title, but they are not tagged, so a screen reader may not read their structure well. The same letter text can also be sent to you by email from the dispute options page. If you need it in another format, email us.
- Security check and payments. The human check (Cloudflare Turnstile) and the payment page (Stripe Checkout) are run by other companies, and they are part of the process of mailing a letter. We have not yet tested them end to end with assistive technology. If either one blocks you, email us and we will help you finish.
